1st Surgery

Aiden had to get tubes put in his ears today to try to avoid more ear infections. He has had about 6 in the last 6 months and one eardrum rupture.

We got up around 4:30 and 5:30 so we could give Aiden some juice (clear liquids only up to 2 hours before surgery). He wasn't too upset with us, but it was clear that he would have rather slept for another hour or so.

Arrived an hour before his surgery and hung out in the waiting room. Aiden carried his comfort item...Floppy the dog - which he has had since he was in NICU when he was born. You'll see him holding him in every photo almost.
Right about our scheduled time, they called us back to the pre-op room where we waited some more...finally a nurse came out and gave Aiden the nose drops that are referred to as "goofy juice". These drops are to relax him so there isn't any anxiety when they take him away from his parents. Almost instantly, he started looking a little glazed and relaxed.

We met the Doctor and Anesthesiologist and they asked if we had any final questions.

A nurse carried Aiden away and we went back to the main waiting area.
We must have been in the waiting area only 10-15 minutes when we were called to come to the consulting room. They were finished and the doctor would meet with us shortly.
He said everything went well and asked again if we had any post op. questions.

About 5 min. later, they brought us to Recovery. Aiden was awake and alert...a little glazed still, but he recognized us and was ready for Mommy to hold him and finally have that morning bottle of milk! He inhaled the bottle of milk, so Daddy fixed him a bottle of apple Pedialyte and he drank that almost as fast...he was slowed down by some little bee-shaped graham crackers.

Once we had been there for about 20 minutes and they could tell that he wasn't having any reaction to the anesthesia, they let us go. On the way out, there were two large toy boxes filled with stuffed animals wearing little t-shirts with the logo of the surgical center...Aiden went straight for a little brown doggie (thank goodness Floppy didn't see him do that!) -he was so excited to get that new little doggie that he cooed and laughed. He continued to coo when we got into the car on the way home.

On a side note...he still loves his Floppy dog and let's out a coo every time he sees him in the morning on the way to school.
